Chamonix in October: What's Open and What Isn't
:quality(75))
October is the quiet gap between summer and winter in the Chamonix Valley. The summer crowds are long gone, the ski lifts haven't started yet, and the valley takes a breath. It's one of the most peaceful times of year to visit, but it helps to know what's running and what isn't before you plan your days. Here's a practical guide to Chamonix in October.
The Lifts That Are Still Running
Most of the valley's summer lifts have closed by October, but two of the big ones are still going. The Aiguille du Midi cable car stays open through the month, closing on 2 November for its annual maintenance break and reopening on 18 December for the winter season. That makes October one of your last chances to reach 3,842m this year, and with far fewer visitors than in summer, booking a slot is usually much easier. The Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace also keeps running into early November, though the ice cave is closed for the season break. For a full breakdown of what each lift offers, see our complete guide to the Chamonix Valley's cable cars and lifts.
The Lifts That Have Closed
The Brévent and Flégère lifts closed in mid-September, and the Tramway du Mont-Blanc has also finished for the season. Operators have sometimes added short autumn reopenings in past years, so it's worth checking the official lift status page before you head out, but don't plan around them. The same goes for Grands Montets above Argentière, which is closed while the new lift system is built.
Hiking and Walking in October
The valley floor and the lower balcony trails are at their best in autumn, with crisp air, clear light and golden larches colouring the slopes later in the month. Higher routes can already hold snow or ice, so check conditions before committing to anything above 2,000m, and carry proper layers. The lower routes in our guide to the best hikes in and around Argentière are the safest bet for October walking.
Restaurants, Shops and Activities
Many restaurants, bars and shops in the valley close for a few weeks between the two seasons, typically from late October into early December, so opening hours are more limited than in summer or winter. Most of the main villages keep a good selection open, but it's worth checking ahead for anywhere you have your heart set on, especially mountain restaurants, which close when their lifts do. French school holidays at the end of October can bring a short busy spell, so book ahead if you're travelling then.
Getting Around
The Mont Blanc Express train runs all year round, and with your Guest Card it's free between Servoz and Vallorcine, so getting between villages is easy without a car. Local buses are discounted with the Guest Card, though terms change from season to season, so check current fares before you travel.
Is October Worth It?
If you want long clear views, empty trails and a slower pace, absolutely. If you need every lift, restaurant and activity running, it's better to wait for December. For more ideas on how to spend your time, see our guide to the best things to do in Chamonix all year round.
